A recent research was conducted to check the quality of tap water in Western Australia. A drop of water under the microscope revealed the presence of a toxic by product chemical called Trihalomethane.
What is Trihalomethane (THM) and how did it end up in my drinking water?
The most common and effective form of disinfectant is Chlorine. It is know for it properties of killing microorganisms and is found to be cost effective as well. As Chlorine does it wonders in eliminating the bugs in the water, some of it react with organic matter to for THM.
THM is an industrial compound used in solvents and refrigerators which is also an environmental polltant and carcinogen.
Preliminary studies conducted by the researchers in University of Western Australia have linked consumption of water containing THMs to increasing birth defects. A second study will be conducted by the National Health and Research council as said on ABC News Australia.
How do I protect myself and my family?
The government is continually trying to provide water free from pathogens and Chlorination is still the most efficient method available. We have to trust every drop that we drink and using a water filter at home has proven to be the most cost effective and efficient ways to give us peace of mind.
Activated Carbon filtration acheives more than 95% of reduction in Volatile organic Chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, Chlorine, THMs etc. Think wisely and keep your body free from harmful contaminants for a long and healthy life!
